BEIJING, Feb. 13 (Xinhua) – Staff members with Hunan Province Electricity Transmission and Transformation Engineering Co., Ltd. have been striving to restore and maintain local power supply in this Spring Festival season, fighting against the continuous freezing rain, heavy snow and strong winds that recently hit central China's Hunan Province.
In the evening of February 8, 2024, the night before the Chinese New Year's Eve, a repair team was ready to work through the night at an electric tower site in Gejia Township in Liuyang City of Hunan.
The repair was like racing against time. "We have stayed in the mountains for days, sleeping only two to three hours each day," said Zhou Siyuan, a member with the repair team.
The freezing weather has brought great challenges to the repair team, as the road to the electric towers were blocked by ice and falling trees. It would take hours to transfer the supplies needed for the repair work to each tower, according to Xu Yongchao, another member with the repair team.
The team members had to take turns to climb up to the tower every two to three hours due to the cold weather, especially when they work during the night, the low temperature in the mountains could be hard to bear, said Zhou.
Local villagers would always open their courtyards to the repair workers, inviting them to wash up and have some hot drink. "It warms us in the heart," according to the members with the repair team. (Edited by Yu Huichen with Xinhua Silk Road, yuhuichen@xinhua.org)
