German carmaker Mercedes-Benz plans to build a factory for light electric vans in Poland. "While we flexibly manufacture vans with combustion and electric drivetrains in all our existing plants, we will build our first pure electric plant in Jawor," said the head of Mercedes-Benz Vans, Mathias Geisen, according to the press statement. For the time being, at least, nothing will happen with the planned cooperation with the US electric carmaker Rivian.
According to statements made at a press conference in Warsaw together with Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki, the group plans to invest more than one billion euros in the plant in the coming years. This is to be geared entirely to the coming generation of purely electrically driven, large vans based on a new architecture.
However, the decision in favor of Jawor still depends, among other things, on the granting of subsidies, the company said. The automaker has maintained an engine plant with more than 800 employees in the city, located about 50 kilometers west of Wroclaw, since 2017.
Meanwhile, electric carmaker Rivian has put on hold its plans for joint van production with Mercedes-Benz, which it announced only in September. According to both sides, the US company is currently prioritizing other projects.
