BEIJING, Dec. 7 (Xinhua) -- Located in West Nanjing Road in east China's Shanghai and dating back to 1882, Zhang Yuan, or Zhang's Garden, reopened recently after four years of protective renovation.
Known as Shanghai's largest, best-preserved and most diverse shikumen compound, Zhang Yuan consists of 13 historic buildings and 24 cultural sites. The renovation has maintained the cultural heritage and characteristics of the shikumen houses, which makes the place a new landmark featuring both western and Chinese elements.
The western part of the compound is now a shopping complex, home to many famous international brands. It is learned that upon its full completion of renovation, boutique hotels, apartments and creative studios will be introduced in the eastern part of the compound, while cultural venues such as a theater and a gallery, will be set up in the northern and southern parts of it.
