BEIJING, Oct. 9 (Xinhua) -- China's energy intensity, or energy consumption per unit of GDP, fell by 26.4 percent from 2012 to 2021, with an average annual decline of 3.3 percent, according to reports released on Saturday by the National Bureau of Statistics.

The decrease is equivalent to 1.4 billion tons of standard coal.

The reports show that China's energy production structure has undergone accelerated transformation, with the proportion of clean energy used continuing rising. In 2021, the installed capacity of non-fossil energy power generation in China reached 1.12 billion kilowatts, higher than that of coal power generation for the first time and accounting for 47 percent of the total installed capacity.

The installed capacity of hydropower, wind power and solar power generation each exceeded 300 million kilowatts last year, all ranking the first in the world.

Meanwhile, China is speeding up the transformation to a clean and low-carbon energy consumption structure. The proportion of natural gas consumption in the total energy consumption increased from 4.8 percent in 2012 to 8.9 percent in 2021. The share of primary power and other energy consumption in the total increased from 9.7 percent in 2012 to 16.6 percent in 2021.

Eyeing a significant increase in energy efficiency, China plans to lower its energy consumption per unit of GDP by 13.5 percent during the 2021-2025 period. (Edited by Su Dan with Xinhua Silk Road, sudan@xinhua.org)
