Germany wants to increase the cooperation between Baltic coast states and build a first joint offshore wind power plant, Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock said at a meeting of regional states on Wednesday.
Baerbock argued at the meeting in Kristiansand in Norway that an expansion of wind power would also mean a reduction in the countries' dependence on Russian gas and oil.
Germany's presidency of the Council of Baltic Sea States (CBSS) begins in July. The council includes 11 countries and the European Union.
Last week, the German government announced plans for a faster expansion of wind power in the North Sea.
Along with onshore wind power and solar energy, offshore wind power is a central pillar in the expansion of green electricity in Germany under the centre-left coalition government, which includes the Greens.
The government significantly increased the targets for offshore wind power compared to the previous government. The target is now a capacity of 30 gigawatts (GW) by 2030, 40GW by 2035 and 70GW by 2045.
Currently, Germany has 1,501 wind turbines delivering almost 7.8GW of electricity in the North and Baltic Seas.
