Trieste, new record in port traffic thanks to Asia and Turkey

May 06, 2022

Abstract : In April, the port of Triste recorded +45% in container traffic compared to last year and +27% compared to 2019, with about 80,000 TEUs handled.

MILAN, May 6 (Class Editori) — The growth of the port of Trieste continues, setting an absolute record for container traffic. In the single month of April, 80,000 TEUs were almost reached, with a double-digit increase on the same period of 2021 (+45%).

This new record represents the highest monthly amount of containers ever handled in Trieste, even higher than its performance in the pre-pandemic period: +27% compared to April 2019, when 62,315 TEUs were handled.

"Although we will have the consolidated figure in mid-May, April is the highest month ever in container handling," Zeno D'Agostino, President of the Port System Authority of the Eastern Adriatic Sea, specified. "The global crisis and the pandemic have not stopped our port, which continues to grow not only in numbers, but as an integrated system that combines docks, railways and dry ports".

The increase in traffic from the East, China and India, in particular, coming from Suez — choosing to dock in the port of Trieste instead of continuing to the ports of northern Europe, saving seven days of travel, with the related costs and the reduction of pollutant — is a trend that has been going on for some time. The new fact is the boom in trade with Turkish ports on the Eastern Mediterranean, which have replaced the traffic on the Black Sea.

"Turkey is playing a very important role in this scenario, not only for goods coming from or destined to that country, but also for the former Soviet republics and the other Middle Eastern countries bordering it. Even the crossing by land and rail from China along the southern corridors ends after the Caspian Sea in Turkey," Enrico Samer, President and CEO of the homonymous for 110 years Trieste — based shipping company, explained during a speech at Motore Italia — dedicated to the excellences of Friuli Venezia Giulia.

"The Motorways of the Sea between Trieste and Turkey is one of our port’s flagships, according to a model of a constantly evolving intermodality, precisely because it uses maritime transport. Trucks have been increasingly transported with semitrailers: trailers have increased from 10% to the current 90%," Samer added.

There are currently 15 ships going to and from Turkey every week. The largest ones can transport up to 480 trucks: they are among the largest ones in the world and consequently require wider land spaces. The Motorways of the Sea line to Turkey is operated by two shipowners with 15 stops a week, about 90 trains — over 40 on the outward journey and the same number on the return journey. Every year it transports about 300,000 trucks, using four separate port terminals within the port of Trieste.

The outlet of this enormous traffic has been made possible by road and, above all, rail connections that the port has implemented in the last year. In addition to the road connection with the large Interporto di Trieste Fernetti — 20 kilometers away near the Slovenian border — more than 200 trains a week leave the port for the production and industrial areas of North-Eastern Italy and Central Europe, to various destinations including Germany, Austria, Luxembourg, Slovakia, Hungary, Belgium and the Czech Republic. Highly specialized intermodal services have been developed to reach the reference markets in Central-Eastern Europe, with direct trains organized by the company Alpe Adria.
