BEIJING, April 29 (Xinhua) -- Dough Sculpture, an ancient folk art that used to be performed in north China, is now well preserved and inherited in Hohhot, the capital city of north China's Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region.
Xue Zinv, an inheritor of Dough Sculpture craft, has been making dough figures for more than 50 years. After years of practice, she has combined the dough figures with strong local features and been called "Dough Sculpture Granny" by local people.
Xue is now teaching the craft to children on study tours in Hohhot with an attempt to better pass on the traditional culture to young generation, and many visitors are attracted by the dough sculptures with rich contents, unique ideas and exquisite shapes.
Dough Sculpture makes use of flour dough as its main material. The dough is cooked in steam and then colored in a variety of tones and consolidated with techniques such as kneading, cutting and sticking, until it finally acquires the form of refined figures.
This type of handicraft was originally connected with worship rituals and ceremonies to pray for good weather and favorable harvests.
