The British-Swedish pharmaceutical company Astrazeneca has moved into its new German headquarters on the site of a former marzipan factory in the Bahrenfeld district of the northern city of Hamburg. The first employees are already based in the new offices, with the rest moving in over the coming days and weeks, a company spokeswoman said. Until now, the group had its German headquarters in the neighboring town of Wedel (Pinneberg district). Astrazeneca is one of the companies that developed a vaccine against the coronavirus.
Hamburg’s Economics Senator Michael Westhagemann (an independent politician) had recently welcomed the relocation plans. "The health industry has proven its innovative strength many times, not only during the coronavirus pandemic. It is a research driver, economic factor, and job engine combined. We are delighted that Astrazeneca has chosen our city and, as a research-based pharmaceutical company, will drive Hamburg forward as a center of innovation in the future." Networking at the new location is of great importance to the company, he said.
According to its own figures, Astrazeneca Germany saw growth of 25 percent and generated total sales of 948.2 million euros in 2021. It employs 900 people. Cambridge-based Astrazeneca operates in more than 100 countries.
