MILAN, Apr 14 (Class Editori) — Ned Curic, the Chief Technology Officer of Stellantis, had anticipated a few days ago a new mega-collaboration in the technology sector. Today, the Group announced that it entered into a multi-year agreement with the California-based chip giant Qualcomm. The agreement follows the ones signed with Amazon, Foxconn and Waymo (Google) and completes the list of partners necessary for the company’s transformation from manufacturer to technology company.
Starting from 2024, Stellantis’ 14 brands will assemble the in-car platforms developed by Qualcomm, improving the entertainment, information and communication systems inside the vehicle. The Snapdragon solution will be integrated into STLA SmartCockpit, the platform conceived and designed by the company in collaboration with Amazon and Foxconn. The agreement with Qualcomm will also help ensure Stellantis’ supply chain strategic components, particularly chip sourcing.
"Qualcomm Technologies' extensive experience in the automotive sector and its leading role in the semiconductor industry will allow us to vertically integrate key elements of our new platforms and more closely manage the entire electronics supply chain, so as to provide access to the best technologies and meet Stellantis' volume potential, as well as enable the achievement of our ambitious Dare Forward 2030 goal," Carlos Tavares, CEO of Stellantis, stated.
By 2030, the company intends to increase the total number of connected vehicles to 34 million, releasing 400 million software updates per year and earning around 20 billion euros annually. An ambitious goal, to say the least, especially if we consider that Stellantis aims to obtain a margin of about 40% from the sale of technological services. In fact, in these collaborations the technological giants tend to grab an important share of the earnings: just think that in the agreement on autonomous driving between Mercedes and Nvidia, the latter is entitled to 40% of all receipts.
"By creating open, scalable and global automotive platforms, including semiconductors, systems, software and services, we offer Stellantis the full potential, as well as a broader automotive ecosystem, to drive the transformation to the digital age of automobiles," Cristiano Amon, President and CEO of Qualcomm Incorporated, noted. Recently, the Californian Group also signed an agreement with Ferrari to accompany the technological transformation of the Rossa.
