Genoa, record container traffic in 2021

February 21, 2022

Abstract : The ports of Genoa and Savona/Vado Ligure were able to maintain and consolidate their leadership role in container handling, reporting in 2021 the port system record with 2,781,112 TEUs.

MILAN, Feb. 21 (Class Editori) — The Ports of Genoa system reacted positively to the 2020 volume crisis, due to the Covid-19 pandemic, recording a significant rebound in 2021 compared to the previous year (+10.3%), thanks also to the new infrastructure set-up: Vado Gateway, the new deep-sea container terminal in the port of Vado Ligure, managed by APM Terminals Vado Ligure Ltd. — an Italian company owned by APM Terminals (50.1%), Cosco Shipping Ports Limited (40%) and Qingdao Port International Co. (9.9%) — has completed its start-up phase while Calata Bettolo the first twelve months of full operations in the port of Genoa.

The ports of Genoa and Savona/Vado Ligure were able to maintain and consolidate their leadership role in container handling, reporting in 2021 the port system record with 2,781,112 TEUs.

The conventional and RORO cargo sector recorded a 12.4% growth compared to 2020, almost reaching 2019 levels (-2.8%), an important sign of recovery for one of the main sectors of the system.

In the solid bulk branch, in 2020 the Authority recorded a clear recovery reaching +16.5% compared to the 2019 drop (-19%).

Liquid bulk — oil and mineral oils — still lag behind, mainly due to the continuing weakness of transport demand (-14% vs 2019; +11.5% vs 2020). On the other hand, vegetable oils and food liquid bulk were positive.

With regard to passenger traffic, ferries have partly made up (+41.6% vs 2020) the drop experienced during the pandemic period (-25% vs 2019). The cruise sector, on the other hand, still remains far from pre-pandemic levels. However, the Ports of Genoa continue to represent a national reference point for the cruise sector and occupy a prominent position also at international level. Genoa is the first homeport in the Mediterranean and Savona and is firmly established in the top 10 Mediterranean ports as reported on the Italian Cruise Watch, the annual report on the cruise sector by Risposte Turismo.
