An initiative made up of representatives of municipalities, companies, and academic institutions from the eastern German states of Berlin and Brandenburg is campaigning for an axis of innovation from Berlin to the Lausitz region in Brandenburg. This is intended to help shape the far-reaching structural change in view of the phase-out of lignite-fired power generation, the initiative emphasized when presenting the project's basic ideas. They are to form a basis for discussion. The opportunities already available should be regarded as a chance to be used more for the benefit and development of the region, said Hermann Borghorst of the Stiftung Zukunft Berlin, an independent forum for civic co-responsibility. "We want to be part of the start of a more intensive cooperation in our Berlin-Brandenburg metropolitan region," he said.
There are already many projects, he said, but it is important to look at the region's development with an eye toward rethinking cooperation. With more than 50 universities and about 40 research institutes, he said, it must be possible to use them more than previously for the benefit of the region's development. Among other things, the initiative wants to create a corridor of innovation and sustainability along the Berlin-Lausitz axis. In addition, work and living are to be linked in the process. Such an axis would be a pilot project for the entire metropolitan region, the foundation said.
