German chemicals group BASF plans to build a new plant in the Alsace region of France and expand its operations in Freiburg, in the southern German state of Baden-Württemberg. The planned Alsace plant in Chalampé will produce the plastics precursor hexamethylenediamine (HMD), the DAX-listed group announced Monday in Ludwigshafen. According to the statement, the plant is scheduled to come on stream in 2024. The company said it plans to expand polyamide 6.6 production in Freiburg. HMD is a precursor used in the production of polyamide 6.6 plastics and coating raw materials, BASF explained. These would be used, for example, in the automotive industry and in the production of specialty fibers.
French President Emmanuel Macron had traveled to Chalampé, right on the border with Germany, on Monday. BASF is investing 300 million euros there, once again demonstrating confidence in France, he wrote on Twitter. Thanks to the new plant, 60 jobs would be created in the region.
Already in advance of the announcement, the Élysée Palace had praised France as an attractive country for foreign investment. For 2022, 21 foreign companies had announced investments of four billion euros and the creation of 10,000 new jobs in France, it said. With about three months to go before the French presidential election, Macron is in campaign mode. Even though the 44-year-old has not yet made his candidacy official, there is little doubt about his ambitions for a second term.
