MILAN, Sept. 30 (Class Editori) -- Italy urged resumption of direct connections with China, since it is a key factor in economic and tourism recovery. The issue was raised by the Italian Minister of Foreign Affairs Luigi Di Maio during the meeting with the Chinese Minister of Commerce Wang Wentao, on the occasion of the XIV China-Italy Joint Economic Commission.
Di Maio supported the establishment of "green corridors" to facilitate the participation of foreign economic operators in trade fairs in Italy.
According to a note issued by the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Minister expressed satisfaction with the positive trend of bilateral trade and of Italian exports to China, which grew by 20.3% and 48.3% y-o-y respectively in H1 2021. This resulted in a 2.6-billion-euro increase from January to June 2021 compared to the same period of the previous year. In particular, agri-food exports rose 50% from January to July, reaching a value of 415 million euros. These figures led Italy to become the third largest supplier of wine to the Chinese market this year.
In order to further support exports, a new ITA office will be opened in Chengdu, the capital of Sichuan. Di Maio also initiated with Wang the establishment of ad hoc working groups to promote agri-food products and e-commerce. These measures will help to ensure an increasingly balanced flow of goods and services between the two countries, favoring the adjustment of the trade balance.
Finally, the two Ministers discussed the protection of intellectual property and the importance of guaranteeing the complete implementation of the EU-China agreement on geographical indications.
