BEIJING, Jan. 18 (Xinhua) -- Beijing's coal consumption fell significantly from 2015 to 2020, authorities said on Monday.
Coal consumption in Beijing decreased from 11.65 million tonnes in 2015 to 1.73 million tonnes in 2020, according to Wang Yingjian, an official with the Beijing Municipal Commission of Development and Reform. The proportion of coal in the city's energy consumption fell from 13.7 percent to 1.9 percent over the period.
During the 13th Five-Year Plan period (2016-2020), Beijing authorities phased out coal-fired units capable of generating over 2.7 million kilowatts of energy, and added gas units capable of generating over 7.2 million kilowatts of energy. They also upgraded approximately 30,000 coal-burning boilers to use clean coal.
Beijing will accelerate efforts to push for green lifestyles in the future, Wang added.
Authorities also said they will enhance efforts to clean up the environment. Enditem
