InfoQuest (January 14, 2021) - The electric charge aid policy to help the public weather through the COVID-19 has been approved by the cabinet yesterday (January 12), said Mr. Supattanapong Punmeechaow, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Energy. The Ministry of Energy plans to allocate 8.202 billion baht to implement the policy. On January 15, the Office of the Energy Regulatory Commission, the Metropolitan Electricity Authority and the Provincial Electricity Authority will issue the details of the policy.
To combat the COVID-19, the government encouraged the public to work from home, which may lead to an increase in electric charge. As a response, the Office of the Energy Regulatory Commission, at the request of the Ministry of Energy, re-deliberated the electricity policy and formulated three major measures, which have been approved by the cabinet.
These measures, implemented from February 2021 to March 2021, will benefit 23.7 million household power users and small enterprises, accounting for 97% of the total.
In the first measure, households with an electric meter reading below 5 Abe and whose electricity consumption is less than 150 kWh per month, including Category 1.1 users within the service scope of Metropolitan Electricity Authority, Category 1.1.1 users within the service scope of Provincial Electricity Authority, small users within the service scope of Electricity Generating Authority, and Category 10 users within the service scope of Sattahip Electricity Authority, the Royal Thai Navy Welfare Concession, totaling 10.13 million, will be exempted from the electric charge of first 90 kWh per month.
In the second measure, among households who consume more than 150 kWh of electricity per month, including Category 1.2 and 1.3 users under the services of Metropolitan Electricity Authority, Category 1.1. 2 and 1.2 users under the services of Provincial Electricity Authority, small users under the services of Electricity Generating Authority, Category 11 users under the services of Sattahip Electricity Authority, the Royal Thai Navy Welfare Concession, totaling 11.83 million, discounts will be granted to users whose monthly electric charges are higher than those in December 2020 (excluding VAT). The details are as follows:
(1) If the electric charge from February to March 2021 is lower than or equal to that of December 2020, the actual electricity fee will be charged;
(2) If the electric charge from February to March 2021 is higher than that of December 2020, discounts will be granted (excluding VAT).
In the third measure, small business users featuring an integration of business and residence (excluding public institutions and state-owned enterprises) of Metropolitan Electricity Authority, Provincial Electricity Authority, Electricity Generating Authority, and Sattahip Electricity Authority, the Royal Thai Navy Welfare Concession will be exempted from the electric charge of first 50 kWh.
