The German government’s target of getting at least 10 million electric cars on the road by 2030 is unrealistic, according to a new study by the consulting firm Deloitte. Under the current conditions, a target figure of 6.35 million vehicles seems likely by that time, according to the study, which was published on Monday. However, with additional efforts, especially by industry, but also by the state, and with a change in consumer attitudes, it should be possible to increase the number of new registrations by 2.2 million, the study found.
Specifically, the Deloitte consultants are advising that the state extends the purchase premiums for electric cars until the end of 2023 and subsequently introduces a significant increase in the price of fuel for the remaining vehicles. The price per liter should increase by a total of 30 cents between 2021 and 2024. The study also argues that the industry has to develop more cost-effective platforms for the e-cars and innovative charging concepts, as well as reduce the production costs for the batteries.
