ENI is quickening over Vietnam, which proves the Ken Bau potential

July 29, 2020

Abstract : Eni confirms and increases the potential of the gas discovery of Ken Bau. The exploratory well Ken-Bau-2X located in the block 114, in the Song Hong basin, confirmed the significant accumulation of hydrocarbons.

MILAN, July 27 (Class Editori) -- Eni confirms and increases the potential of the gas discovery of Ken Bau. The exploratory well Ken-Bau-2X located in the block 114, in the Song Hong basin, confirmed the significant accumulation of hydrocarbons.

Ken Bau 2X has been perforated two km away from the discovery well, under 95 metres of water, by reaching a 3,658 metres depth under the sea level. The well met a gas mineralization and condensed on a total depth of more than 110 m with many intermissions of sandstones from the Miocene age interchanged with clays.

The preliminary estimates on the accumulation after the data about Ken Bau 2X show a discovery of raw gas between almost 200 and 250 billion of cubic metres on site, with 400-500 million barrels of condensate associate.

The results of Ken Bau 2X confirm the importance of the discovery made in 2019 and the commitment of Eni Vietnam and its partner Essar E&P to quickly outlining its potential, even though operations are carried out in a particularly challenging period due to COVID-19 pandemic.

Eni Vietnam is the operator of the Block 114, with a shareholding of 50 percent; the remaining 50 percent is held by Essar E&P. In line with these results, Eni Vietnam and its partner are developing a further exploratory well for the discovery of Ken Bau in the basin of Song Hong, where Eni holds 100 percent of the near Block 116, the new activity of prospecting and perforation.

The gas market in Vietnam is rapidly growing, going hand in hand with the constant improvement of the domestic GDP and the consequent development of gas plants for the energy production powered with domestic resources and, in the future, with imported LNG. The discovery of Ken Bau represents an opportunity to quickly meet this emerging demand. Eni has been active in Vietnam since 2013 and it operates in four blocks located in the explored basins of Song Hong and Phu Khan, in the offshore of central Vietnam.
