Jiangdong New Area's air hub to take shape as Meilan Airport phase II project ready for calibration

May 30, 2020

Abstract : "The flight calibration will start on June 1," said Wang Junshan, executive deputy commander of project headquarters at the construction site of phase II expansion project of Haikou Meilan International Airport on May 29.

HAIKOU, May 30 (Xinhua) -- "The flight calibration will start on June 1," said Wang Junshan, executive deputy commander of project headquarters at the construction site of phase II expansion project of Haikou Meilan International Airport on May 29.

Since the full resumption of work, the project has been pushed forward with full-load construction and landmark progress in construction. The brand new "air hub" in Jiangdong New Area has been accelerated to take shape.

On May 29, the flight calibration aircrew sent by the Flight Inspection Center of CAAC arrived at the phase I parking apron of Haikou Meilan International Airport under Hainan Airlines Group, and it is planned to officially start the flight calibration on Meilan Airport phase II on June 1.

According to the standards and working procedures of civil aviation industry, flight calibration on airport runway, navigation equipment, navigation aid lighting facilities and flight procedures is the prerequisite for subsequent flight test, industry general inspection, transfer, trial operation and formal navigation of new airport project.

Since the completion and acceptance of the flight area project for the expansion program on April 15, Meilan Airport has been working closely with Hainan branch of Air Traffic Management Bureau of CAAC, Hainan Meiya Industrial Co., Ltd. and other organizations to speed up the preparation work of the flight calibration.

Compared with phase I of Meilan Airport, the runway in phase II is wider and can be used for take-off and landing of large aircraft; the number of terminal stands is up to 35, so that the convenience and comfort will be greatly improved since passengers can board directly from the boarding bridge.

The pilot can completely rely on instruments to realize the takeoff and landing of the aircraft when it is invisible to the naked eyes, and impact of bad weather on the takeoff and landing of the aircraft and flight delays or cancellations can be greatly reduced.

The expansion project, as one of the major landmark projects in the construction of Hainan Free Trade Port, not only undertakes the important mission of expanding and upgrading Hainan's civil aviation, but also serves as the engine for Hainan's airport industry, headquarters economy and other core business formats, noted Wang.

The Airport Industrial Park with Meilan Airport is important for industrial cluster development in Haikou Jiangdong New Area. When the second phase project is completed and put into operation, Meilan Airport will form a north-south double runway operation pattern, realize convenient conversion of various transportation modes among aviation, island-looping high-speed train, intercity rail transit and expressway, and becoming an important gateway for foreign trade and economic exchanges of Hainan Free Trade Port.
