Thailand still dominates in Hong Kong's fragrant rice market

June 04, 2020

Abstract : MOC is trying hard to implement Deputy Prime Minister and Commerce Minister Jurin Laksanawisit's policy on maintaining and expanding overseas Thai rice markets.

InfoQuest (June 3, 2020) -- MOC is trying hard to implement Deputy Prime Minister and Commerce Minister Jurin Laksanawisit's policy on maintaining and expanding overseas Thai rice markets, but the ongoing COVID-19 makes it possible to organize negotiation meetings for Thai trade delegations to enhance relationships with overseas rice importers, said Mr. Kirati Ratchano, director general of the Department of Foreign Trade (DFT) of the Ministry of Commerce (MOC). Against the backdrop, the ministry has ordered DFT to hold a meeting with Thai Rice Exporters Association, Hong Kong Rice Importers & Exporters Association and DITP Hong Kong through the Video Conference system on May 29, 2020 to keep abreast of rice trade situation in Hong Kong which is one of Thailand's major jasmine rice export markets.

At the meeting, DFT gave a brief introduction on rice production and trade data during COVID-19. To put the figure into perspective, Thai rice exports to Hong Kong, mainly jasmine rice and fragrant rice, were up 27 percent compared with the same period of the year prior and accounted for 66 percent of Hong Kong's rice market.

DFT promises that the Thai government will not control or ban rice export and Thailand is completely able to supply enough rice, and encourages Hong Kong to export more rice from Thailand, added he.

This meeting has greatly boosted Thai rice traders' confidence, and is a great success as expected. Next, DFT will continue to keep close track of rice trade situation in major Thai rice export markets through the Video Conference system.

Every year, Hong Kong imports about 327,055 tons of rice, of which 190,180 tons is from Thailand, accounting for 52 percent of Hong Kong's rice market. As evidenced from these figures, Thailand has occupied the largest share in Hong Kong's rice market for years. By type, Hong Kong mainly imports jasmine rice, fragrant rice and ordinary rice from Thailand.
