Quarantine for those arriving in Beijing, at their own expense

March 18, 2020

Abstract : Those coming from foreign countries, even residents, will have to fulfil a centralized quarantine period. There will be restrictions for people older than 70 and for those in need of assistance.

MILAN, Mar. 17 (Class Editori) - Mandatory quarantine for all those arriving in Beijing. From March 16, all people arriving from foreign countries in the Chinese capital (but even residents) will have to fulfil the quarantine period at a centralized observation centre at their own expense.

The measure is part of the interventions that the municipality administrations have progressively taken starting from February, in order to strengthen control on Chinese and foreign citizens arriving in the city, with the aim of limiting the cases of Covid-19 infection.

On March 11, Chinese Authorities have extended the mandatory quarantine period of 14 days to all those coming from countries considered at risk, including Italy.

Yesterday new restrictions were introduced. Exceptions have been provided for people older than 70, minors, pregnant women or for those who do not share their residence with other people. Therefore, they can ask to fulfil the quarantine period at their own homes, through a request which has to be sent before coming back to the capital.

“Quarantine measures have been recommended also for everyone- foreigner or not- who is arriving in Beijing from other Chinese areas”, as the Italian embassy in the People’s Republic of China has explained in a note.

On Monday, there have been 21 new confirmed cases of Coronavirus in China, 20 of which imported. According to the data released by the National Health Commission, the total number of infected people has increased up to 80,881. The death toll reached 3,226 people, 13 more than the previous day. In the Hubei’s province, epicentre of the epidemic, 12 deaths have been recorded, 11 of which in Wuhan.

Moreover, Hong Kong, where the first case has been recorded in January and where the social distance measures to contain the virus have been implemented, will adopt 14 day-quarantine measures for all the people who will arrive in the city, starting from next Thursday at midnight, in order to prevent an “outbreak” of coronavirus cases. This is what Carrie Lam- the District Governor- has announced, aiming at encouraging all citizens to avoid transfers and not essential travels. Thanks to the strong answer of the local community, the financial hub, which, 17 years ago has already been affected by SARS, has also been successful in containing the Covid-19 spread.
