Representatives of Germany's energy industry, environmentalists and unions on Wednesday appealed to politicians to accelerate the nation's roll-out of clean energy to meet 2030 climate goals.
"The expansion of renewables must finally be accelerated effectively," wrote German energy and environmental associations and the Federation of German Trade Unions in a letter to Germany's 16 state premiers and Chancellor Angela Merkel.
The appeal, seen by dpa, comes a day before a conference of the state premiers is set to take place, aimed at breaking a coalition deadlock between Merkel's Christian Democratic Union (CDU) and its partners, the Social Democrats (SPD), over wind energy.
Signatories to the letter want proposals for an obligatory distance of one kilometre between new wind turbines and residential buildings to be scrapped. They also want a subsidy cap on solar panels to be abolished "immediately".
The authors called on German politicians to do more to ensure states meet the goal of generating 65 percent of the country's power via renewables by 2030.
On-shore wind is particularly lagging, partly due to reluctance on the part of residents to accept new wind parks in their vicinities. After months of fierce debate on how to tackle such resistance, the CDU and SPD have yet to agree on a common approach.
