Farmers in the Eastern German state of Saxony-Anhalt have called on politicians not to forget rural areas when expanding the 5G data network. A fast Internet connection is a basic requirement for a sustainable agriculture, said Sven Borchert, vice president of the Saxony-Anhalt Farmers' Association, at a press conference in Magdeburg. Three quarters of the farms in the state currently do not have sufficient Internet access.
Around 50 percent of the investments made by farmers go into modern equipment, Borchert said, and that is dependent on a fast network connection. "We are already noticing today how quickly we are reaching our limits, because we don't have proper Internet access at the edge of every field and at every milk churn," Borchert said.
