MILAN, Jan 16 (Class Editori) - Roberto Battiston, former chairman of the Italian Space Agency has been honored with the International Science and Technology Cooperation Award for the year 2019, an award that Chinese management has been assigning since 1994 to eminent international personalities who stood out for the collaboration in the scientific sector.
At the end of November, on the occasion of the China-Italy science week, Lorenzo Fioramonti, who was the Minister of Research at that time, celebrated the signing of 15 bilateral agreements in the scientific sector, and he inaugurated the first Chinese-Italian Technological Park in Jinan (1.6 billion Euros), together with his Chinese counterpart Wang Zhigang.
The Italian-Chinese scientific partnership dates back to the Nineties and has been strengthened in the last 20 years. Satellite projects Cses-1 (China Seismo Electromagnetic Satellite), and Cses-2 can be quoted as examples. The launch of the latter is expected for 2022 and its terms were established on the occasion of the visit of Xi in Rome, in March 2019.
"Italy is the western country with the strongest space partnership with China, as this initiative confirms", Battiston explained. "This award proves the quality of scientific collaboration among Italian and Chinese colleagues; I've always appreciated their competences and curiosity about scientific cross-border problems."
The system will allow the seismic monitoring and the understanding of the geophysical mechanisms which cause earthquakes. China is "an excellent partner and Chinese people have a truly and genuine desire to collaborate in the scientific sector research", the physicist and Professor at Trento University added.
It is now important to understand if Rome will play a role in the works required to create the modules of Tiangong 3, the Chinese space base. The final agreement dates back to the day when Roberto Battiston was still the chairman of the Italian Space Agency, before being removed from his position when the coalition Lega-Five Star Movement started to govern Italy.
The partnership with Beijing in such a strategic sector as the aerospace industry has drawn the attention of the USA, is already putting pressure on the Italian Government, so that Zte and Huawei will not be part of the Italian 5G network. According to leaks, Fioramonti would have temporally stopped the involvement of the Italian Government last November.
These thoughts are not shared by Battiston, who is, on the contrary, among the promoters of the Italian-Chinese scientific collaboration. Before Battiston, Nobel Laureate and Senator for life Carlo Rubbia, geophysicist Fabio Rocca and chemist Umberto Colombo have been awarded.
