Despite the best domestic sales in a decade, German carmakers saw an annual fall in production as export markets continued to dry up, the German Association of the Automotive Industry (VDA) reported on Monday.
Domestic sales in 2019 saw an increase of about 5 per cent in sales year-on-year to about 3.6 million new vehicles, the VDA said. The great majority of those purchases - nearly two-thirds - was by companies, according to a government agency.
Nonetheless, overall production was down 9 per cent on the year to 4.7 million vehicles, thanks to reduced demand from overseas. That matches ongoing falls in export figures.
