Volkswagen is accelerating its plans for the production and sale of electric cars.
The German car giant now aims to reach its goal of producing 1 million electric cars by the end of 2023, two years earlier than its previous target, the company said Friday.
By 2025, the Wolfsburg automaker aims to have produced 1.5 million vehicles from its all-electric ID line.
Production of the ID.3 began in November in Zwickau, south of Leipzig. It is the first mass-produced fully electric vehicle for Volkswagen, and it will be the basis of forthcoming models.
Volkswagen wants to become a world leader for electric cars but faces competition from other manufacturers who came earlier to the sector, such as US carmaker Tesla.
VW is investing 11 billion euro until 2024 in developing e-mobility for its core brand, and some 33 billion euro across its brands companywide.
