After an expansion phase of around three months, Vodafone says it has around 10,000 customers in Germany who are already using the super-fast 5G mobile communications standard. CEO of Vodafone Germany, Hannes Ametsreiter, said on Wednesday that currently the available spots are mainly being used by private customers. There is, however, also great interest in industry, he said. "But such huge application scenarios are not always easy to set up quickly," Ametsreiter said. Currently, 5G is being used successfully in a number of places, including the production halls of the electric vehicle manufacturer eGo in Aachen.
The auction of frequencies for the super-fast mobile communications standard ended in June after a tough bidding battle. In total, the big mobile phone companies had paid 6.55 billion euros for it. Vodafone is now offering the fast mobile communications standard at 60 locations. By the end of the year, a second wave of expansion is scheduled to take place at 120 locations with around 300 antennas. This puts the company at a similar level to Deutsche Telekom. The company is focusing on the cities of Frankfurt, Berlin and Düsseldorf.
In the vicinity of the transmitter masts, download speeds of approximately 500 megabits per second can be achieved with a corresponding smartphone, which significantly exceeds the performance of LTE. Vodafone plans to publish the locations on a network map shortly so that the spots can also be found. In addition, the speed is to be almost doubled from the beginning of 2020, as the network frequencies acquired in the auction will then also be used.
