Cpl Concordia wants to enter the large Chinese gas business

October 23, 2019

Abstract : Cpl Concordia, a company from Modena operating in the gas sector, took part in the fifth China LNG & Gas international summit, held in Beijing on 17 October.

MILAN, Oct. 21 (Class Editori) – Cpl Concordia, a company from Modena operating in the gas sector, took part in the fifth China LNG & Gas international summit, held in Beijing on 17 October, and took part in the workshop dedicated to the liquefied natural gas market, in the presence of Chinese energy giants and prominent members of the gas field from Australia, Singapore, Portugal.

Paolo Barbieri, president of the company, was invited to speak by Italgas, who selected Cpl among his best business partners. The Italgas delegation and its main suppliers participated in the summit within the framework of the agreement with State Grid Corporation of China which provides, among other things, the sharing of knowledge, methods and solutions applied to the energy sector, in particular in the sector of natural gas distribution.

“We have presented our experience of over 60 years as suppliers of gas services and systems to an international audience. We have found a growing interest, particularly as regards the LNG sector, in liquefied natural gas,” explained Barbieri. Cpl Concordia, thanks to the consolidated know-how in the gas and energy infrastructure networks, has built the first LNG regasification plant built in Sardinia for a private industry and is implementing other projects throughout northern Italy, which also include the supply of fuel through the subsidiary Polargas.

“Our presence at the Chinese summit, for which we have to thank Italgas, is an integral part of the international development strategy that CPL intends to undertake to strengthen its growth in the energy core business and the technological networks,” concluded Barbieri.

Italgas reports to Cdp Reti, which in turn is 59% controlled by Cdp (Cassa Depositi e Prestiti) and 35% is part of State Grid of China, through its European subsidiary.

Cpl Concordia is a multiservice cooperative group born in 1899 in Concordia sulla Secchia, province of Modena. It is active in heat management (global service and facility management), gas (construction, maintenance and management of methane and LPG networks), water, district heating, public lighting and technological services (software, video surveillance, remote control), gas measurement products, development and application of renewable sources.

This set of services generated in 2018 a turnover of 257 million, serving multi-utilities and public bodies for 80%, and private individuals for 20%. In Concordia, in the heart of the Modena lowlands struck by the earthquake in 2012, Cpl Concordia has a workforce of 1550 employees, distributed in over 30 subsidiary companies.

“In the coming years we will focus more on foreign countries. We are already present in Romania, the market is constantly evolving and innovation is the main engine of our cooperative, a mission that drives all sectors and nurtures new ones,” explained Barbieri.

This year's budget is expected to exceed 300 million euros in revenues thanks to facility management, cogeneration, public lighting, technological networks and software supply.

“Considering the stagnation of the national economy, the result is good, but we expect further growth thanks to the development of new technologies related to blockchain and big data. We are investing in the LNG sector, the liquefied natural gas that we are able to transport where there is no network. We will also focus on the sale of certified products for methane gas management, taking advantage of our historical know-how,” revealed Barbieri.

Italgas, and its sister company Snam, both controlled by Cdp Reti, are the main gateway to the Chinese market for the Modena cooperative and its excellent services, given the relationship with State Grid corporation of China which in 2014 invested 2 billion euros to buy the stake in Cdp Reti, aimed at establishing a strategic partnership that would help China to transition energy to clean sources.

“In the coming years gas will become increasingly central to the Chinese economy,” said CEO of Snam Marco Alverà, who opened Snam Gas & Energy Services Beijing this year, with offices in the business district of Beijing.

The performance expected by the gas sector in China in the near future are quite impressive. «In the coming years, China will invest massively on new gas pipelines, storage facilities and regasification capacity to cope with the rapid increase in consumption and to combat pollution by reducing its dependence on coal, which still accounts for 60% on the energy mix," explained Alverà.

Driven by internal production, which compared to 2015 grew from 150 to 200 billion cubic meters, the weight of gas in the energy mix in the Asian country is destined to double by next year, from 5% in 2015 to 10%. Consumption, equal to 280 billion cubic meters in 2018, could reach 600 billion cubic meters in the medium term. As for transportation, the Chinese network will double with the construction of 100,000 kilometers of pipelines, three times longer than those into service in Italy.
