InfoQuest (September 19, 2019) -- Ms. Onmon Sapthawitham, director-general of the Department of Trade Negotiations (DTN) of the Ministry of Commerce (MOC), revealed that DTN plans to host a seminar themed "Opportunities and Challenges for Thailand in Thailand-EU FTA Negotiation" on September 23. The seminar will invite government agencies, private sector, farmers, representatives of non-governmental organizations, and experts and scholars of various fields to share insights and offer suggestions on the re-launch of Thailand-EU FTA negotiation.
"DTN will compile a report based on the information and suggestions gathered at the seminar and use it as a reference in the subsequent Thailand-EU FTA negotiation," said the director-general of the DTN.
EU is a large market spanning 28 European countries with a total of over 500 million people. It is Thailand's 4th largest trading partner and the 2nd largest source of investment. In its government polices submitted to the parliament, Thai government mentioned the re-launch of the Thailand-EU FTA negotiation, which was interrupted in 2014, seeking to expand opportunities and market for Thai business community.
Particularly, the world today is facing economic fluctuations and uncertainties of global trade. What's more, many neighboring ASEAN countries of Thailand, such as Vietnam and Singapore, have signed FTAs with EU; Indonesia is discussing with EU on the issue; Malaysia and the Philippines also plan to re-launch their FTA negotiation with EU. The FTAs that EU signed with many countries all come with high standards, including government procurement, intellectual property, environment, labor, and other new issues related to trade. Therefore, the seminar will solicit opinions of all parties, gather information and deliberate issues at policy level, and use those information as important reference in re-launching Thailand-EU FTA negotiation.
Besides, DTN plans to host seminars countrywide in October, aiming to gather useful opinions for the re-launch of Thailand-EU FTA negotiation.
