InfoQuest (August 26, 2019) -- Thai Prime Minister and Defense Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha attended the opening ceremony of the 40th General Assembly of ASEAN Inter-Parliamentary Assembly (AIPA) and delivered a speech. In the speech, he stressed the contribution of all parties to realizing the set goal of building the ASEAN Community and the important role of AIPA in supporting the work of ASEAN management and building the three pillars of the ASEAN Community (ASEAN Political-Security Community, ASEAN Socio-Cultural Community and ASEAN Economic Community) over the past 40 years since the establishment of AIPA. The prime minister also thanked all parties that have contributed to the progress of AIPA, and ASEAN legislatures who have been supporting AIPA by offering assistance, experience and advice.
He also expressed his appreciation of AIPA's efforts in promoting sustainable development in ASEAN, especially in protecting ASEAN from drug threats. In March 2019, the 2nd Meeting of AIPA Advisory Council on Dangerous Drugs (AIPACODD) was held at which the proposals of formulating the Alternative Development plan, consolidating resources to enhance the public's immunity to drugs and laying down measures to curb, solve and eliminate the drug problem in ASEAN region were passed unanimously.
In addition, Thailand, as ASEAN's rotating chair, is also committed to promoting solutions to environmental issues, especially the "Bangkok Declaration" adopted at the 34th ASEAN Summit which vows to take joint actions to reduce maritime waste in the region. He hoped that AIPA can bear the long-term interests of ASEAN people in mind and take the declaration as the guiding principle framework for relevant work.
According to the prime minister, Thailand is ready and willing to support the work of the ASEAN Secretariat and AIPA, in an effort to facilitate concrete results in various affairs concerning the ASEAN Community, promote the sustainable development of ASEAN in all aspects, and develop ASEAN into a community with competitive potential and transformative ability with other countries.
Many key leaders attended the meeting, including the Chairman of AIPA, the Secretary-General of AIPA, the Deputy Secretary-General of ASEAN responsible for the ASEAN Socio-Cultural Community, delegations of AIPA's member states as well as representatives of AIPA's observer states and international organizations.
