Germany’s federal government is to fund research into the digitalization of agriculture at universities in the state of Saxony. The Saxon Ministry of Agriculture announced on Wednesday that the Federal Ministry of Agriculture had pledged 2.8 million euros to the University of Leipzig and 7.6 million euros to the Technical University (TU) of Dresden.
Saxony's Agriculture Minister Thomas Schmidt, a member of the Christian Democrats (CDU), said that the funding was aimed at pushing forward research into digital agriculture. "Technological innovations and environmental protection are inseparably linked," he said. Researchers at the University of Leipzig want to use the funding for a project that looks at how digital technologies can support the cultivation of special crops.
A project being led by the TU Dresden is to research the potential of comprehensive network coverage in a 5G experimental field between Nossen (district of Meißen) and Torgau (district of Nordsachsen). The neighboring communities will also benefit from the experimental field.
