Federal Research Minister Anja Karliczek, a member of the center-right Christian Democrats (CDU), believes that the university city of Ulm will continue to be a central location for battery research in Germany. During a visit to research institutions in the city on Monday, she said that "a substantial two-digit million amount" would be made available for this purpose. Initial talks with the state government about investing in the development of state-of-the-art batteries in Ulm and at its partner location Karlsruhe have already been held.
Karliczek defended the controversial decision in favor of Münster and against Ulm as the location for a battery research factory, which is being funded with half a billion euros. Despite speculation from "certain quarters," the founding commission of the Federal Ministry of Economics had not initially recommended Ulm. The decisive factors for the decision were the excellence of the research, the economic benefits and the entire process of battery production including recycling.
