The new 5G mobile communications standard is to receive special support in six model regions throughout Germany. On Wednesday, the budget committee of the Bundestag released the necessary funds totalling 44 million euros. The model regions are to be located in the cities of Hamburg, Aachen and Kaiserslautern, as well as in the Lausitz region in eastern Germany, the area around Braunschweig and Wolfsburg in Lower Saxony, and the northern Bavarian region of Amberg-Weiden. According to the decision, the federal government's funding will be used "to develop, test and demonstrate the potential of 5G in a clear and practical way."
The 5th generation of mobile communications - hence the abbreviation 5G - has high transmission speeds and latency times close to zero, which means data transfer occurs almost in real time. This in turn is important for things like autonomous driving and telemedicine, where even minimal delays could have serious consequences. 5G, on the other hand, still plays a subordinate role for private customers, since most mobile applications run well even with the fastest commercially applied standard - 4G or LTE. Nevertheless, the existing LTE networks can be fragmentary.
