German car manufacturers consider themselves to be well-positioned when it comes to e-mobility.
"We view ourselves as being in a strong competitive position," Bernhard Mattes, the president of the German Association of the Automotive Industry (VDA), told the Deutschlandfunk broadcaster on Tuesday. "In the next three years, the German automobile industry will invest 40 billion in e-mobility alone, in new products."
The product portfolio will triple and the vehicles' operating range is increasing significantly, he said. "We are clearly doing our part to meet climate protection goals," Mattes added.
The government and the car industry had agreed on Monday to forge ahead with the expansion of the charging-station network for electric vehicles in Germany.
"We did not get any commitments and we did not make any promises either," the VDA president said, noting that the issue was how and under what conditions the charging infrastructure can be created in the coming years.
The acting leader of the centre-left Social Democratic Party, Malu Dreyer, was also present at the meeting between the industry and politicians. She sees the coming change as a big issue for existing jobs.
"We will not have less work, I am convinced of that. But it will be very different work," she said on Tuesday during an appearance in the ARD broadcaster's "Morgenmagazin" show.
"This century is a real century of vocational training. People will get into a situation where they have to retrain," she said, adding that people should be offered this possibility.
