The Chinese Unionpay card to widespread among merchants

June 17, 2019

Abstract : Nexi, the PayTech banks system listed on MTA of Borsa Italiana and leader in Italy for digital payments, signed a commercial agreement with UnionPay, the Chinese company with the largest payment card system in the world, present in 174 countries.

MILAN, June 14 (Class Editori) – Nexi, the PayTech banks system listed on MTA of Borsa Italiana and leader in Italy for digital payments, signed a commercial agreement with UnionPay, the Chinese company with the largest payment card system in the world, present in 174 countries. This is to expand, by March 2021, the acceptance of UnionPay cards to all the sales points affiliated with Nexi.

To date, UnionPay cards are accepted by approximately 100 thousand merchants who use Nexi's centralized and integrated payment systems: thanks to the agreement, within 2 years the service will be extended to all the merchants affiliated with the PayTech of the banks, including e-commerce merchants.

The agreement is obviously aimed at favoring the payment systems of Chinese tourists in Italy. "The number of Chinese tourists arriving in our country is constantly growing: in 2018 they were over 2 million. It is a huge pool of buyers who will be able to make purchases with their UnionPay cards from the merchants of our partner banks," explained Enrico Trovati, Nexi Merchant Services & Solutions director.

"This is an important benefit for all merchants, in particular for those who operate in the hotel, food and car rental sectors. Therefore, the partnership with UnionPay allows us to further encourage the spread of digital payments in Italy," the manager continued.

This agreement is for UnionPay a significant step forward in its growth path, because it expands the opportunities for accepting cards in Italy up to 95% by March 2021.

"Italy is a very important destination for Chinese tourists and we are pleased to have signed the agreement with Nexi because it significantly increases the acceptance of our cards in the country," agreed Wei Zhihong, Market Director of UnionPay International and Head of its European Branch. "With Nexi we can offer our customers the opportunity to make purchases more easily with a large number of Italian merchants."
