German machinery manufacturers saw an 11-per-cent downturn in orders year-on-year for April, the mechanical engineering association VDMA reported on Wednesday, the fifth month in a row with falling orders.
"The ongoing dispute over trade among the big economic blocs, but also many regional political crises, are making investors nervous and reluctant to make new orders," VDMA chief economist Ralph Wiechers said.
Domestic demand in particular took a hit in April, with orders down 15 per cent from last year.
Orders from outside Germany also fell by 9 per cent in an industry that is heavily geared towards exports.
