MILAN, Apr 23 (Class Editori) -- The railway is the facility that more than any other allows the port of Trieste to compete with the Northern European ports for the Central and Eastern European markets. For this reason, the port system authority of the eastern Adriatic Sea is developing, in collaboration with RFI, an investment plan of over 106 million euros to strengthen and improve connections.
The Port Authority chairman, Zeno D'Agostino, provided the details in a parliamentary hearing before the deputies of the Transport commission. The meeting focused on trade relations with China, following the signing on 23 March of the MoU for Sino-Italian cooperation along the new Silk Road and the cooperation agreement between the port of Trieste and the giant state-owned China Communication Construction Company (CCCC).
The development of railways can foster the interest and opportunities for Trieste's infrastructure. Nowadays, rail transport accounts for 40% of container flows to and from the hinterland. In 2018 the port of Trieste was the first in Italy for absolute movement and railway handling. Last year ended with a total of 62.7 million tons of goods. Containers sector registered the highest growth rate: 725,500 TEU with an increase of +18% in 2017, and +49% in 2016. Furthermore, adding the handling of containers with semitrailers and swap bodies (expressed in equivalent TEUs), during 2018 it reached the equivalent of 1,400,000 TEUs (+7.70%).
This is the framework within which there are collaboration opportunities with the CCCC. D'Agostino recalled to the deputies that the cooperation relies on the CCCC envoy to attend meetings of the EU EU-China Connectivity Platform, in which the Port Authority is involved with the Trihub project, the integrated plan to strengthen the railway system of Friuli Venezia Giulia, "at the service of intermodal flows" from Adriatic ports.
In Italy the possible collaboration with CCCC concerns precisely the railway infrastructures (the Servola and Aquilinia platforms) included in the Trihub project. Any evaluation of possible collaborations, however, D'Agostino highlighted, will be carried out together with RFI.
Outside the Italian borders the agreement looks at the project for the construction and management of an intermodal terminal in Kosice, Slovakia, "a point of strong interest for the railway market of the port of Trieste" and on logistic projects in China including the construction of a distribution platform in the Nanjing area, "to promote the coordinated flow of Italian products, starting from the wine sector and agri-food".
