The German railway company Deutsche Bahn (DB) is testing new ways to protect against the noise made by freight trains.
"This includes for example low noise barriers and so-called mini barriers that are built directly on the rails," DB Chief Noise Officer Andreas Gehlhaar told dpa.
The grey aluminium noise barriers that are several metres high and are used in residential areas might then no longer be needed everywhere. Rail dampers are also due to be tested.
Around 30 noise-reduction techniques are currently being assessed as part of a project funded by the German government, according to DB. Many of the designs are to be installed this year on railway sections between the cities of Munich and Regensburg, as well as between Berlin and Cottbus. Measurements will then be taken.
The project is set to run until the end of 2020. DB had tested similar small noise barriers years ago in the Middle Rhine Valley.
