BEIJING, April 19(Xinhua) -- About 11.54 billion standard cubic feet (scf) of natural gas was piped from Central Asia to China through a major energy project in the first quarter of this year, according to the Central Asia Gas Horgus Station.
As China’s first overland cross-border gas project and a demonstration project for energy cooperation in countries along the Belt and Road routes, the steady operation of the China-Central Asia pipelines is of strategic significance for safeguarding China's energy security and promoting transformation of China's energy structure towards green supply.
By the end of March this year, the pipelines, which went into operation in 2009, has delivered a total of 263.2 billion scf of natural gas to China.
The gas transported via the pipelines passing through countries such as Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan, makes up more than 15 percent of China's annual consumption, benefiting over 300 million people. (Edited by Bao Nuomin, Yang Yifan, baonuomin@xinhua.org, yangyifan@xinhua.org)
