MILAN, Apr 14, Class Editori - CDP will support the construction of the new railway network that will connect Afghanistan to Iran. In its role as Financial Institution for Development Cooperation which has been playing since 2016, CDP signed a 65 million financial agreement with the Afghan Ministry of Finance to build the rail corridor that would potentially extend towards Turkmenistan and Pakistan.
In particular the initiative provides the construction of 44 kilometers railway connecting the western suburbs of Herat to the city airport. The initiative would become the broadest project in terms of improvement of the transport network within the country, which is fundamental to halt the isolation of some areas of the region.
The group now led by Fabrizio Palermo and chaired by Massimo Tononi already contributed to the infrastructural development of Afghanistan, troubled by almost 30 years of conflict and now among the possible junctions of the Belt and Road Initiative, the Eurasian connection project launched by China in 2013.
In 2017 CDP contributed to the construction of the road facilities between Herat and Chist-e Sharif, in the western area of Afghanistan, through an agreement worth over 92 million euros.
The 155km road is part of the plan aimed to strengthen the east-west corridor, to connect Herat directly to the capital Kabul, therefore shortening the 300km journey between the two cities. CDP had also provided a 29 million aid credit to the adjustment of the Herat airport.
The 2019-2021 business plan calls for 3 billion euros to become the cofinancing partner in foreign countries. In this context, the agreement reached with Snam and the Chinese Silk Road fund should also be examined to identify areas of common interest and joint investment opportunities in China, Italy and third countries, in the sectors of finance, agriculture, food, technology and infrastructure.
