Romanian academics eye opportunities in exchanges with China under BRI

April 12, 2019

Abstract : Romania and China should enhance cooperation within the framework of the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), especially through academic exchanges in such areas as economy, sociology and public policies, Romanian academics said here Thursday.

BUCHAREST, April 12 (Xinhua) -- Romania and China should enhance cooperation within the framework of the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), especially through academic exchanges in such areas as economy, sociology and public policies, Romanian academics said here Thursday.

"We fully agree that Romania and China can cooperate at global level, taking into consideration the specificity of our economies," Professor Gheorghe Zaman, director of the National Institute of Economy of the Romanian Academy, said at a roundtable on the BRI and the cooperation between China and Central and Eastern European Countries (CEEC).

The BRI is a platform for development opened by China to all countries, said Zaman and other Romanian attendants.

"The Belt and Road Initiative aims to make the world economy more stable and more resilient to crises in a sustainable environment. We believe that a new system of cooperation between countries is needed in order to sustain development," said Professor Gao Peiyong, vice president of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, at the roundtable.

There is no doubt that the globalization can enhance not only world trade, but also global development, Gao said.

Gao's remarks were echoed by Professor Ilie Badescu, director of the Institute of Sociology of the Romanian Academy, who said that the BRI, which promotes globalization, is also based on cooperation between different economies.

Given the importance of the China-CEEC cooperation and the BRI in a wider context, Romanian and Chinese researchers should find ways to cooperate in all fields, covering not only economic topics, but also social and legal issues, as well as public policies, Zaman said.

The two countries should encourage more academic exchanges, such as jointly publishing books, special magazines and studies, co-organizing sociological and economic researches as well as academic meetings on topics of common interest, the Romanian academics proposed.
