Chancellor Angela Merkel (CDU) makes a statement at the end of her tour of the Hannover Messe.
German Chancellor Angela Merkel took her traditional tour of the Hannover Messe - the world's largest industrial technology fair as it opened to the public on Monday.
She was accompanied by Prime Minister Stefan Lofven of Sweden, the 2019 partner country.
"I remain a strong advocate of open markets and free trade," Merkel said at the formal opening ceremony on Sunday evening, as she called for joint European action.
Lofven called for industrial cooperation between Germany and Sweden. "We have a lot to learn from each other," he said.
A total of 6,500 exhibitors from 75 countries are showcasing technology that is devoted to the intelligent networking of man and machine, often called Industry 4.0.
The development of 5G mobile networks, which will form the foundation for autonomous driving, is also in the spotlight at the trade show that runs until Friday.
