The words "Industry 4.0" are affixed to a stand at the Hannover Messe
Germany's association of technical inspection agencies has called for new security architecture to be developed for the Internet of things and connected industrial products, at the start of the Hannover Messe trade show for industrial technology.
Given the sustained threat posed by cyber attacks, action by policymakers in Berlin and Brussels is needed, said Joachim Buehler, the managing director of the VdTUEV association.
"By being connected, functionally safe machines, systems or equipment can become highly unsafe products," he said. There have not been enough responses to this in Germany and from the European Union, he added.
So far, product safety has been based solely upon the physical nature of a product, Buehler said, so the concept of product safety has to be redefined. Digital safety also has to be an integral element. Buehler called for test organizations that are independent from manufacturers to have a strengthened role.
"If the health of product users is at risk, neutral bodies have to be involved in the test and monitoring processes," he said.
