Soravit Tanitho, vet and head of Department of Livestock Development (DLD), revealed the department's current work to prevent an African Swine Fever (ASF) outbreak. He said that all related agencies are now working together to prevent and detect any signs of the ASF in Thailand, with screening operations at 50 Customs checkpoints nationwide including at airports. He said the war rooms have been set up where government officials and farmers together monitor areas of a potential ASF outbreak at provincial to village levels, in an attempt to prevent damage to the entire pig industry and national economy.
“ASF can only spread among pigs, and is not communicable to humans or other animals, thus consumers are 100% safe to enjoy pork products. However, we all sides should calm down, and cooperate in preventing illegal imports of pork products, so as to avoid unnecessary risks,” Soravit said.
Through the information provided by an insider via the application "DLD4.0", DLD learned that Vietnam is the source of fake news about ASF. Such news is forwarded through Facebook and LINE. The Ministry of Information and Communications of Vietnam has announced that it has confirmed the falsity of such news. DLD urged the public not to share misleading information which might trigger widespread panic online. Or else, a direct impact will be exerted on consumers, agriculture and food industry that is in keeping with international production standard of Thailand.
