Ruengchai Kongthong, deputy governor of Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT) revealed, as it gets warmer, this summer will see a spike in power demand. According to him, hot weather will raise the peak power demand this year to about 29,000 MW from late April to early May, up about 2 percent since 2018. Notably, power demand in greater Bangkok is on track to exceed 10,500 MW during the period.
Given this, EGAT's power plants as well as independent power producers (IPPs) and small power producers (SPPs) will carry out necessary maintenance and cooperate with each other in the season, especially from March to May when power demand is usually high, in order to guarantee power security, Mr. Roengchai said.
In the hot season, the capacity of reserve power generation will be kept at about 30 percent to cope with possible cases of emergency. Besides, EGAT asked PTT Plc to supply sufficient natural gas for increasing power generation. Meanwhile, EGAT's power transmission system is also well-prepared to stop the maintenance of its major power stations and equipment in an effort to ensure uninterrupted power transmission during the period.
"EGAT will maintain the capacities of power generation and transmission systems to meet electricity demand. Meanwhile, it asks all parties to reduce their power consumption to guarantee stable power supply," Mr Roengchai said.
