German carmaker Volkswagen (VW) and US technology giant Microsoft are to offer their planned cloud computing services for cars in more countries than previously announced.
Volkswagen Automotive Cloud, which uses Microsoft technology, is to be available in the US and China as well as Europe, the chief executives of VW and Microsoft said in Berlin on Wednesday.
VW wants to connect all of its future car models — especially those in its fully electric ID series – to the internet, offering car owners more internet access services.
The ID electric series will be the first vehicles to use the Automotive Cloud, VW head Herbert Diess said.
"It will hit the European market in 2020. In the same year, production will start in China," Diess said. The first models from the electric ID series will start coming off the production line in the US in 2022.
The two companies are now to work "on first flagship projects for vehicle network services," focusing on communication and navigation solutions as well as personalized services.
