According to the latest report by The Rising Lab, people born in the 1960s are increasingly likely to use mobile payment systems. Consumers in urban centers of the fourth-, fifth- and sixth- category are also increasing, where growth exceeds that of Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou.
The last report drawn up by the Chinese studies center The Rising Lab may show the profile of the classic Chinese travelers. It surely is a snapshot of the new Alipay and WeChat users, who are more and more used to these systems of mobile payment in order to make purchases abroad.
During the recent celebration of lunar New Year's Day, on average the payments abroad performed by residents of Zhoushan, a small town in the province of Zhejiang, have increased by 55%. On the other hand Beijing, Shanghai and Canton showed a growth rate between 24% and 30%. The same trend was observed on WeChat Pay.
The payment system linked to the most widespread app in China owns in fact 40% of the total expenses incurring in the smaller cities, and underdeveloped towns both in terms of population and level of the GDP.
Another evidence highlighted in the report is the use of these systems by people born in the sixties while traveling abroad. The number of users has increased by 130% compared to last year. As for the expenses, growth rate was 250%. If we look at those born between 1970 and 1979, users exceed 190%, while the expenditure reaches 232%.
Western countries are increasingly comfortable with payments performed with these two systems. In China it is now a standard, to the point that cash is almost becoming outdated. It is not yet so elsewhere. France ranks among the top 10 countries in the world in terms of expenditure, the first country outside the circle of those closest to China geographically.
