BEIJING, Dec. 24 (Xinhua) – The completion ceremony of a Chinese firm-built new airport terminal in Abuja, capital of Nigeria, was held on December 20, with the attendance of officials from Nigeria and China.
The project, undertaken by the Nigerian branch of China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC), started construction on March 1, 2014. It mainly includes a four-story modern passenger terminal covering an area of about 56,000 square meters, a two-story cargo terminal, a 20,000-square-meter phase-1 apron and related supporting facilities.
The new airport terminal is very close to the airport station of the Abuja light rail line, the first of its kind in West Africa which was also built by the Nigerian branch of CCECC and began operating from July of this year.
It is the first airport terminal that has a seamless connection with the rail transit in Nigeria and West Africa, providing a convenient and efficient way for passengers to arrive at or depart from the airport and thus helping Nigeria advance the construction of a regional air transport center, said Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari at the ceremony.
Zhou Pingjian, the Chinese Ambassador in Nigeria, noted at the ceremony that improving transportation infrastructure is a priority for Nigeria to achieve economic recovery and growth, and fully promoting the China-Nigeria cooperation under the Belt and Road Initiative will definitely inject new impetus into the win-win results between the two sides.
It is reported that the new airport terminal in Abuja is one of the four airport terminals in Nigeria undertaken by the Nigerian branch of CCECC, which will help the country form a modern air transport network connecting the southwest, southern, central and northern parts of Nigeria.
