Software development, data services, e-commerce: the digital economy is becoming ever more important for the German state of Berlin, according to a new study.
Last year, it represented 8.7 per cent of the value added, more than industry (8.5 per cent) and construction (4.4 per cent), said the study released on Wednesday by IBB, the business development bank of the state, which is home to Germany's capital.
"Berlin is a winner when it comes to economic transformation through digitalisation," the study's authors wrote.
It found that every seventh new job over the last 10 years was created in the sector, which in Berlin now accounts for some 88,000 jobs - from 1.2 million nationwide.
While jobs have been cut in the consumer electronics and hardware and infrastructure sectors since 2008, e-commerce more than offset that decrease thanks to the heavyweight online retailer Zalando.
The German cities of Munich and Dresden have an even higher share of digital economy employees than Berlin.
