China issues guideline to improve biodiversity in Yangtze River -- The State Council, China's cabinet, has released a guideline to improve aquatic life protection and ecological rehabilitation in the Yangtze River. The Yangtze River, the longest river in China, has been damaged by human activities including dam building, water pollution and over-fishing, resulting in deteriorating biodiversity and arduous tasks of ecological restoration, said the guideline from the General Office of the State Council. Before 2020, fishing on major waters of the river will be banned throughout the year, more conservation areas will be built and better supervised, and important habitats along the river should be put under effective protection.
Chinese insurers encouraged to invest in quality listed companies, CBIRC official -- Chinese insurance institutions are encouraged to invest in high-quality listed companies and listed companies launched by private enterprise as financial and strategic investor, said Ren Chunsheng, an official of the China Banking and Insurance Regulatory Commission (CBIRC) at the recent China Wealth Management 50 Forum. China likely to raise cap on annual duty-free purchases in Hainan -- China will likely raise the cap on the amount of annual duty-free purchases in the island province of Hainan and increase the number of offshore duty-free shops, the Shanghai Securities News reported on October 15. At present, non-Hainan residents are allowed to buy duty-free products worth up to 16,000 yuan each year before they leave the island by flight or train. The State Council, China's cabinet, gave Hainan permission to run a trial offshore duty-free program on April 20, 2011, to help develop the island into a world-class tourist destination by 2020.
Yiwu introduces new rules to welcome foreigners -- The city of Yiwu, a marketplace for small commodities in east China's Zhejiang Province, introduced a series of new rules on October 12 to welcome more foreigners. The rules, issued by the city's human resources and social security bureau, include lowering standards for foreigners who want to work in the city, and a new point-based system, which could be critical for the extension of work permits. Foreign workers in China have been classified into categories A, B and C. A, as top-notch personnel; B as professional talent; and C as ordinary workers. "Around 90 percent of foreigners in Yiwu are ordinary workers on the basis of the current categories, meaning that those who are over 60 can hardly work in China," said Wu Shenlan, a bureau official.
