German carmaker Daimler plans to be bring the first model of its new electric car EQ to market in mid-2019. At a presentation in the Swedish capital Stockholm on Tuesday evening, company chief executive Dieter Zetsche unveiled the EQC, a purely battery-powered sport utility vehicle (SUV). To follow on the first model is to be an entire series of further completely newly-developed electrical vehicles, ranging from compact cars to luxury sedans.
Zetsche said that Daimler will be investing a good 10 billion euros (11.6 billion dollars) in the development of electro-cars and a further billion in battery production.
By Daimler account, the EQC is initially to be brought to market in Europe, followed by China and the United States. It will be built in the Mercedes Benz plant in Bremen, on the same production lines as cars with internal combustion engines. The batteries will be supplied by Daimler's plant at Kamenz, outside Dresden. A further production site for the EQC is to be Beijing, where a battery plant will be established parallel to the car plant. Daimler first unveiled the EQ series about two years ago.
